The blockchain world has given birth to a wonderful narrative known as CryptoKitties, in which users can purchase, breed, and trade virtual cats. But, I’m guessing, you’re curious about what it is and how it works. You’ve arrived at the right place!
Did you know the Ethereum game ‘CryptoKitties’ got so popular in December 2017 that it accounted for 25% of all Ethereum traffic? I know it’s insane!
In any case, this comprehensive CryptoKitties beginner’s guide will teach you all you need to know, including how the narrative originated, how their Genetic Algorithm technology works, and how to play CryptoKitties!
If you already know how to play CryptoKitties, you can move ahead to the ‘How to Play CryptoKitties’ section.
So, what are you holding out for? Let’s get this party started!
What are CryptoKitties?
Axiom Zen, a Canadian firm, launched CryptoKitties in December 2017. Axiom Zen is active in a variety of initiatives, including software development and virtual reality, but CryptoKitties has been one of their most successful to date!
The founders sought to build an Ethereum game in which anybody in the globe may own virtual cats produced by a smart contract. Every cat that is made is one-of-a-kind, with various colored fur, eyes, and hair!
There are also CryptoKitty genders, which are named after either a male or female horse! We refer to a male CryptoKitty as a Sire, while we refer to females as Dames.
Consider it similar to human DNA. Everyone on the earth has a unique internal DNA that is never the same as anybody else’s, and CryptoKitties are no exception! The technology that enables us to know it is the Genetic Algorithm, which I will go into in further detail later.
Although CryptoKitties is a game, the only thing you can do with them buys, breed, and sells them. Some cats are considerably uncommon than others, and they may fetch a high price. People have paid more than $100,000 in certain circumstances.
Do you recall the Pokémon card game, when you’d buy a packet hoping to get a rare card like Charizard? Well, CryptoKitties are similar in that they generate fresh kittens at random using a smart contract code!
Is CryptoKitties considered a cryptocurrency?
People frequently believe that having CryptoKitties is the same as owning a cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin or Litecoin. No, it isn’t! It has no value outside of the network and you cannot sell it on third-party exchanges alongside other digital tokens or currencies. CryptoKitties, on the other hand, are ‘blockchain assets’ because people will spend money on them.
CryptoKitties are ERC-721 coins built on top of the Ethereum network. The acronym ERC stands for Ethereum Request for Comments. ERC comes in many forms, the most common of which being ERC-20. ERC-20 tokens, on the other hand, are fungible.
The US dollar is a real-world example of a fungible asset. If you give someone a $20 bill, they are unlikely to repay you with the same bill. This is irrelevant since any note they offer you will have the same value and you have to spend it in the same manner.
ERC-721 tokens are not transferable. This implies that each token is distinct and you can confirm them independently. Consider it like owning a piece of land. Although there are many various types of property plots in the world, yours is one of a kind! This is identical to CryptoKitties!
What is the origin of CryptoKitties?
On December 2nd, 2017, the first CryptoKitty was born. Since then, the Ethereum blockchain has generated a new one every 15 minutes, which will continue until November 2018. These CryptoKitties are known as Generation-0 kittens, and there will be 50,000 of them.
However, you can make CryptoKitties in a variety of ways! Do you recall when I said you could get both male and female CryptoKitties? CryptoKitties, like real-life kittens, may mate with each other to create more CryptoKitties!
The simplest approach to breed is to have both a Sire (male) and a Dame (female). However, if you just have one of those, you may locate another person to assist you!
Assume you have a Sire (male) CryptoKitty and wish to breed it. You would need to discover someone who had a Dame (female) CryptoKitty before you could begin breeding!
The crucial thing to remember is that the Dame (female) owner gets to keep the newborn CryptoKittie! However, even if you just have a Sire (male), you may still generate money by charging a Siring Fee to the owner of a Dame (female). Unlike the makers’ Generation-0 CryptoKitties, there is no limit to the number of CryptoKitties you may generate by breeding!
When a new CryptoKitty is born, it inherits some characteristics from its parents. Surprisingly, the CryptoKitty developers refer to these as “Cattributes”! Consider it like a newborn human infant. They may adopt their mother’s dark hair and father’s crooked nose.
However, the newborn may have unusual characteristics, such as extremely large feet! This is equivalent to a newborn CryptoKitty, and they spawn at random! Remember, the more unique the qualities of the infant, the more valuable it may be!
So, now that you know where they originate from and how you can create the new ones, let’s speak about the CryptoKitty marketplace!
The CryptoKitty Exchange
Remember how I mentioned CryptoKitties being a blockchain asset? That means you may purchase, trade, and sell them in a free market!
When you gain one, we promptly deliver the CryptoKitty token to your ERC-271 wallet, making it extremely simple to use. If you wish to sell your CryptoKitty, you may choose the selling price on ETH. When someone buys it from you, you will receive the ETH directly to your wallet!
You can sort the search results because there are hundreds of different CryptoKitties for sale. You may sort it by age, generation number, or value, for example!
Since its inception in December 2017, the CryptoKitties marketplace has been a resounding success. Over 60,000 people signed up in the first week, resulting in $5 million in CryptoKitty sales. Just one week later, there were 150,000 users and $15 million in CryptoKitties sold.
Remember that every time you purchase, sell, breed, or trade a CryptoKitty, you must pay an Ethereum blockchain transaction fee.
Transaction times were slowing down as the game grew in popularity. To address this issue, the developers raised the GAS costs so that customers would not have to wait for extended periods for their CryptoKitty transactions to be processed.
So, now that you know how the online marketplace works, the next section of my CryptoKitties guide will go through the Genetic Algorithm!
The Genetic Algorithm feature is the fundamental technology that distinguishes each CryptoKitty. Because the language might be tough to grasp, I’ll describe it in layperson’s terms!
You may recall that I previously stated that the unique characteristics of a CryptoKittie are comparable to that of a human’s DNA, which contains information about how your body functions. Everything about you is determined by your DNA, including whether you have straight hair, are tall or short, and what color your skin is!
The Genetic Algorithm controls the backdrop color, facial expression, whether the cat has stripes, and the patterns on their fur in the world of CryptoKitties.
DNA in the human body comprises many distinct proteins that are connected in some manner. The Genetic Algorithm, on the other hand, employs numbers! When a person is born with a 50/50 mix of their mother and father, their parents’ genes mingle. This is the crossover in the Genetic Algorithm. Consider the following example.
Human DNA genes from the mother combine with genes from the father to form the DNA of the child.
CryptoKitty DNA 01011101 (unique Dame number) x 011110010 (unique Sire number) = 010110010 (unique number of newborn CryptoKitty)
As seen in the above example, the numbers used to construct a unique CryptoKitty are binary, so they only use the integers 0 and 1. Furthermore, no two sets of numbers can ever be the same, ensuring that your newborn CryptoKitties are one-of-a-kind!
Remember that, while the new CryptoKitty will have many similarities to its parents, it will also have some variances. Breeders that use both a rare Dame and a rare Sire produce the most valued offspring!
They create all the aforementioned programs using Ethereum smart contracts, therefore everything automating everything. A decentralized application, also known as a dApp, hosts each CryptoKitty smart contract. The CryptoKitties platform is one of the most popular dApps of all time, and it converts the Genetic Algorithm into visual things that resemble lovely kitties! Isn’t that incredible?
So, now that you understand how the Genetic Algorithm works, let me show you how to get started with CryptoKitties!
How to Play CryptoKitties
Purchase some Ethereum
You will need to purchase some Ethereum before you can begin using CryptoKitties (ETH). The simplest method to accomplish this is through Coinbase, where you may buy some with your debit/credit card or bank account.
After you’ve purchased any ETH, you’ll need to download MetaMask, a virtual wallet. This wallet is compatible with the CryptoKitties network, allowing you to purchase, breed, and sell cats. The MetaMask wallet is extremely simple to use, and it is also available as a Google Chrome plugin! Transfer your ETH into MetaMask after you’ve set it up.
Set up a CryptoKitties account.
- Now that you have an ETH-funded MetaMask wallet, you can go to the CryptoKitties website and sign up for an account.
- You must first enter your email address and select a nickname. The CryptoKitties terms and conditions will now be displayed to you. Please read them before clicking Agree!
- Following that, a MetaMask pop-up window will prompt you to sign in to CryptoKitties. Click the Sign In button.
- You should now be on the CryptoKitties portal, showing that you successfully registered an account!
How to Purchase CryptoKitties
- If you have completed all the previous stages, you should now have a MetaMask wallet that is funded with ETH and a registered account on the CryptoKitties site. It’s time to go get some CryptoKitties!
- Click Marketplace at the top of the page.
- There are 140,000 distinct CryptoKitties to pick from, as shown in the screenshot below! That’s more breeding!
- You may pick the type of CryptoKitty you wish to buy by clicking the Filter button.
- The most expensive CryptoKitty for sale, as seen below, is valued at 100,000 ETH! That is worth moreover $60 million as of May 2018! That is out of my price range, therefore I will get the lowest one instead.
- Kitty 702165, which costs 0.002 ETH, appeals to me. Click on the image of the one you wish to purchase.
- You must now click the orange Buy Now button!
- You must confirm the amount before executing the trade. Once you’re satisfied, click OK to purchase this Kitty.
- A MetaMask pop-up window will now appear, displaying transaction data and GAS costs. Finally, click Confirm to finish your transaction.
That’s it, you’ve just gained your very own CryptoKitty! The token will be visible in your MetaMask wallet after the Ethereum network processes the transaction!
I hope you found my Crypto Kitties tutorial useful! It’s incredible how popular this game has gotten in such a short period.
So, what are your thoughts on CryptoKitties? Do you intend to purchase a CryptoKitty of your own? If yes, what sort of cat do you want? I believe it all depends on how much money you want to spend. Generation-0 Because you get to keep the newborn token, Dame’s will always be the most expensive.
If you follow this tutorial from beginning to end, you should have a good idea of how the Genetic Algorithm works. It’s fascinating that smart contract technology operates as DNA does.
Finally, you should be able to use the Crypto Kitties platform independently. If you decide to purchase one, please let me know which CryptoKitty you purchased. I’d want to see how it appears.
So there you have it. That concludes my tutorial on the wildly popular cat breeding game CryptoKitties.
